Otsego County Soil and Water Conservation District is committed to installing riparian forested buffers throughout Otsego County. The target buffer acreage for the NY portion of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed as part of the Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) is 10,222 acres. In 2017 OCSWCD planted five buffers totaling 19 acres and 2960 trees.  Riparian buffers planted along stream banks and rivers provide multiple functions including filtering nutrients from waterways, stabilizing stream banks, providing wildlife habitat, and more!

There are multiple opportunities for installing a buffer on your land including the NYS Trees for Tributaries Program, the Upper Susquehanna Coalition Buffer Program, FSA Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP), NRCS Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), and more.
