2011 LEATHERSTOCKING ENVIROTHON

On Wednesday, April 27, 2011 high school students from through-out Otsego county competed in the 2011 Leatherstocking Envirothon at Gilbert Lake State Park, Laurens, New York.  There were nine teams of five members each competing in the hands-on environmental completion.

The teams completed in five environmental categories; forestry, wildlife, soils & land use, aquatics ecology, and a current issue.  This year’s current issue is "Salt & Fresh Water Estuaries".  The five member team work as a team answering questions such as; entering a soils pit to determine the soils, testing the water flow, identifying wildlife, and the age of a tree.

The top winner in for the third year in a row was Oneonta High School with a score of 402.3.   Second place winners were Cooperstown Central School Team B with a score of 387.3 and the Milford Central School Team A taking third with a score of 367.7.

The Otsego County Soil & Water Conservation District presents the top winner in Soils with the Elizabeth V. Stein Memorial Award.  This year we had a tie between Cooperstown Central School Team B and Worcester Central School, with scores of 64.

This year was the first year that we were able to present the Theodore “Ted” Peters Environmental Scholarship Award in honor of Ted Peters.   This award went to the Oneonta High School.  Each team member will be awarded $100.00 once they enroll into a college and/or university. (see full information attached on the scholarship).

The Oneonta High School team will advance to the New York State Envirothon to be held at Hobart & William Smith Colleges, Geneva, NY on May 25-26, 2011.

This year New Brunswick, Canada will host the 2011 Canon Envirothon, which is the final Envirothon completion for the top winners from through out the United States and Canada.  The 2011 Canon Envirothon will be held at Mt. Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada. At each level of competition the potential for college scholarship funds increases significantly.

The Leatherstocking Regional Envirothon would not be possible without the continued support of our volunteers and local sponsors.
